If your home is like many others in the Sacramento area, you may have a patio door that leads from the rear of your home into your backyard or outdoor living space. The patio door may be a sliding glass door, double French doors or a standard door. It may be used frequently throughout the day to let your pets in and out of the house, by the kids when they run outdoors to play and by you when you want to step out onto the patio to relax and unwind. With so much use on a regular basis, there is a good chance that your patio door will be damaged or may break at some point. When this happens, you may be wondering what the best option for making a patio door repair is.

Assessing the Damage

Patio doors may be made largely of glass, or they may be mostly wood, metal or fiberglass. Each of these types of doors may develop different issues over time. For example, patio doors with glass may have cracked or chipped glass. Other types of doors may get dented, dinged or scratched. Some doors may have loose or squeaky hinges. The house may settle, and this may result in the door sticking in the frame. All of these and other common patio door issues may impact your usability of the door. Before you can make a repair, however, you must assess the damage to understand more fully what is the cause of the issue.

Reviewing the Options

When you understand the cause of the issue, you will be able to better determine what steps need to be taken to remedy the situation. Some solutions are obvious. For example, if you have broken glass in your door, the obvious solution is replace the glass. However, some homeowners may have had plans to upgrade to a different type or style of door at some point, and a damaged door may be a great reason to make the upgrade now. In some cases, the cost of repairs may be significant, and it may be more cost-effective to replace the door. It is important for homeowners to understand all of the options available to them before scheduling service.

Scheduling Service

If your door has become damaged, your first impulse may be to set up a patio door repair service call with a trusted handyman. A better idea, however, may be to request a quote for a repair as well as a replacement. This will help you to better understand your options. When you contact Sacramento Handyman, you can request a free estimate for both a repair and a replacement. With this information, you can make an informed decision that is best for your home.

  1. Hi there

I have quite a large patio door at the back of my house that leads on to a decked area.

It has not really been used alot over the winter months and I found a couple of days back that the lock on it is really stiff and will not open properly.

Additionally I found that when I got it open it felt really stiff when trying to move it. I assume something has gone wrong with the runners. Would you say I would need to replace it or is it serviceable? I am more than happy to ring you to discuss this.

  2. Great I found your website from Google, I’ve been searching for any handyman who can repair my patio door. I am calling you now for the estimates.

  3. I appreciate you guys putting this information out there. After trying to fix my doors myself, and failing, I am going to be scheduling appointment soon as my bonus comes in. I hat not being able to use the doors in the summer and it has already been three weeks. I can’t open or close it without is falling off the track and I really don’t need someone breaking it.
